Japan Ranks Last Among Six Nations in AI Expectations Survey

Japan ranked last among six countries in a private-sector survey measuring companies' expectations for generative artificial intelligence (AI), with only 9% of respondents saying the technology had exceeded their expectations, The Mainichi reported.

Japanese companies continue adopting generative AI, but a new survey shows they remain the least optimistic about its performance.

The survey, released by PwC Japan Group, found Japan had the lowest satisfaction rate among the countries surveyed, which included Britain, China, Germany, South Korea, and the United States.

The findings come despite a growing trend among Japanese companies to adopt AI for streamlining business operations, including summarizing meeting minutes and other routine tasks.

By comparison, the United States recorded the highest level of satisfaction, with 38% of respondents saying generative AI performed "well above expectations," followed by Britain at 32%. China registered 18%, Germany 17%, and South Korea 11%.

Approximately 3,000 people participated in the survey, which was conducted between February and March.

Respondents were managerial-level employees from companies with annual sales of 50 billion yen (about $310 million) or more, including executives involved in evaluating or approving the adoption of generative AI.
