Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Automobiles, Dairy, and Alcohol

President Donald Trump signed proclamations imposing 50% tariffs on selected Canadian goods, including automobiles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products, Ben Werschkul reported for Yahoo Finance.

A senior administration official said the tariffs would affect a broad range of products, "ranging from wine to hockey sticks to cement."

The automobile proclamation alone reportedly included 18 pages of products subject to the proposed duties if the measures take effect.

The move marks a significant escalation in U.S.-Canada trade tensions. According to the report, the tariffs would apply even to goods that were previously exempt under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

However, the new tariffs would not apply to products such as crude oil, a major Canadian export on which many U.S. refineries depend, or potash, a key fertilizer ingredient widely used by American farmers.

The Trump administration said the measures were a response to what it described as Canada's "continued discrimination" against U.S. goods and to Canada's retaliatory tariffs on American products.
