Japan is planning to send bulletproof vests and other defense supplies to Ukraine as early as Tuesday, Mar. 8, 2022, following the Russian invasion of the country, government sources told Mainichi Japan on Monday.

Helmets, tents, and winter clothing will be also among the first items to be sent by Self-Defense Forces (SDF) aircraft to an airport in a country near Ukraine, the sources said.
The provision of such nonlethal items comes at the request of Ukraine and falls within the bounds of Japan's war-renouncing Constitution.
"As the people of Ukraine are faced with difficulties, I want to deliver the necessary supplies as soon as possible," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during a Diet committee session.
