Japanese Firm Develops Space Junk-Zapping Laser Satellites

Sky Perfect JSAT Corp., in collaboration with Riken, has been researching space junk removal technology since 2020. The laser-based technology aims to vaporize debris, causing it to gradually lower its orbit and eventually re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

The venture, Orbital Lasers Co., plans to launch small satellites equipped with this technology by fiscal 2025, with the goal of offering debris removal services by fiscal 2029.


This innovative approach seeks to tackle the growing challenge posed by space debris, which poses risks to existing satellites and future space missions.
