A recent Threads post claimed that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, announced plans to purchase a social media platform run by a rival billionaire.

The claim appears to exploit the well-known rivalry between Bezos and Musk - the two richest men in the world. I Photo: Kim Shiflett, NASA Kennedy Flickr
However, this claim is false, Joedy McCreary reported for USA Today.
The post read: “BREAKING NEWS: Jeff Bezos responded to Elon Musk by posting an announcement to buy X for $333 million, making Elon Musk angry and prompting him to speak out.”
The Threads post received more than 500 likes within four days. However, there is no record of any such announcement from Bezos or of the alleged social media exchange referenced in the post.

Contrary to the post’s assertion, Bezos did not make any announcement about purchasing X for $333 million. A review of his verified Instagram and X accounts found no such statement.
Likewise, there is no record of an "angry" response from Musk on his X account.
A transaction of this magnitude between two of the world's wealthiest individuals would undoubtedly attract media coverage, yet no reputable news outlets have reported on such an offer or any social media exchange between the two billionaires.
