Speculation about OpenAI’s first AI-native hardware has swirled since longtime Apple design chief Jony Ive joined via an acquisition in May.

Now, the first details are emerging, Alexei Oreskovic reported for Fortune Tech, citing The Information.
According to the report, OpenAI is working with suppliers on a screenless smart speaker and is exploring smart glasses, a wearable pin, and a digital voice recorder.
The first devices are slated for late 2026 or early 2027. Ive is said to be leading the effort with about two dozen former Apple employees recruited for the project.
The products themselves may not sound revolutionary—Amazon has sold smart speakers for a decade, and Meta recently unveiled advanced AI-powered glasses. But Ive’s track record suggests he could turn niche gadgets into mass-market sensations, as he did with the iPod and iPhone.
