U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said the proposed rebranding violated federal law requiring the institution to honor President John F. Kennedy exclusively.

The ruling also blocked a separate plan to close the center for two years for renovations.

While the court allowed renovation work to proceed, it said any future closure would require proper consultation with the institution’s board and adherence to statutory obligations.

Following the ruling, Trump reportedly abandoned the renaming effort and suggested transferring oversight of the center to Congress.

The decision has sparked broader debate about political influence over national cultural institutions.
