The 41-year-old superstar said he wants another opportunity to compete for an NBA championship. His new contract represents a dramatic pay cut, approximately 92% lower than the $52.6 million salary he earned with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
Despite the reduced salary, James remains one of the wealthiest athletes in history.
He became the first active NBA player to achieve billionaire status and is estimated to have a net worth of about $1.4 billion. Over his 23-year NBA career, he has earned approximately $581.3 million in on-court salary.
