Libya's new Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush has called for regular meetings at the ministerial level as a way to resolve conflict in her war-torn country, in a speech on Tuesday, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of dictator Moamer Gaddafi. It has become a battleground for rival proxy forces, which has in turn drawn in foreign powers. Foreign ministers of the states involved in the conflict in Libya should meet regularly in the future, she said in a speech broadcast on Libyan television.

The working group should focus on a vision for a solution to the crisis and on issues related to political, economic and other interests of the Libyan people, she said.

Mangoush did not say which states should send foreign ministers to join the initiative.

She said this plan would be announced on Wednesday at the Second Berlin Conference on Libya, when foreign ministers from countries involved in the conflict meet to discuss ways to further stabilize the North African nation.

Germany and the United Nations are due on Wednesday to co-host a second Libya conference, following up on a meeting in Berlin in early 2020. Participants include the United States, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), along with representatives of Libya's transitional administration.
