Malaysians Protest Rapid Data Center Expansion

Malaysia's emergence as Asia's fastest-growing data center hub is drawing increasing public scrutiny as communities raise concerns over the industry's impact on local resources.

After surpassing Singapore in data center growth, Malaysia is facing protests and growing political debate over the industry's rapid expansion, The Japan Times reported.

Demonstrations against a major data center complex in Johor, the country's fastest-growing data center region, marked the first protests of their kind in Malaysia.

Similar concerns have also emerged in Selangor, the nation's richest and most populous state, where residents are questioning the environmental and infrastructure impact of large-scale projects.

"Two years ago, it was just about building capacity," said Cheam Tat Inn, managing director of the Malaysian unit of U.S. data center operator Equinix.

As demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure accelerates, governments across Asia are increasingly weighing the economic benefits of data centers against concerns over electricity consumption, water use, and land resources.
