The firm has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department of Agriculture to develop agro-solar farming systems, food-processing facilities, and food terminal projects.

These initiatives are intended to improve storage, logistics, and distribution of farm products, boosting productivity and supply chain efficiency nationwide.

Megawide, known for its “First-World Engineering” strategy and its use of advanced precast concrete systems and automated Japanese and German machinery, has delivered several major infrastructure projects.

These include passenger terminals at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (via a joint venture) and Clark International Airport, as well as the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange.

The company is also involved in ongoing projects such as the Metro Manila Subway Project (including the Ortigas and Shaw stations), the Malolos-Clark Railway Project, the Carbon District Modernization, and various residential and commercial developments.

The Megawide–DA initiative supports the objectives of Republic Act No. 7900, which aims to modernize the country’s high-value crops sector, according to Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr..

“This MoU is a realization of the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for a modern and sustainable farm sector that ensures food security and farmer prosperity,” Laurel said.

The initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses by 30% to 50% and promote clustered farming enterprises.

This approach would allow smallholder farmers to pool resources, access modern technologies, and transition from subsistence farming to commercial-scale agribusiness, helping strengthen rural economies and attract private sector investment.

“The initiative is part of a broader strategy to reposition farmers as agri-entrepreneurs and integrate agriculture with energy, logistics, and industrial systems,” Laurel added.

“It also supports the development of branded, high-value agricultural products for wider market access.”

Meanwhile, the DA has signed a separate MoU with the National Power Corporation and Asian Pyrochem Technologies Inc. for Project SAFE (Sustainable Agroforestry Farming Enterprise), which will be implemented in watershed areas.

According to the DA, Project SAFE promotes agroforestry production of crops such as cacao, coffee, bamboo, and abaca, while integrating carbon financing mechanisms and nature-based solutions.

It also introduces business-to-business barter systems to improve farmers’ access to inputs and markets.
