The Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is making significant progress, with the first contract package (CP101) now 40 percent complete and on track to commence partial operations by 2029, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
With a capacity to accommodate 519,000 passengers daily, the subway aims to drastically reduce travel time from Valenzuela to NAIA from the current 1 hour and 30 minutes drive to just a 35-minute train ride. I Photo: Department of Transportation Philippines
As the country's first underground railway, the MMSP will span 33 kilometers, connecting Valenzuela City in the north to Pasay City in the south, with a spur line at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Parañaque City.

The CP101, one of seven civil works contracts for the MMSP, involves constructing three underground stations along Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, and North Avenue and a depot in Valenzuela City.
The construction site for CP101 is managed by a Joint Venture comprising Shimizu Corporation, Fujita Corporation, Takenaka Civil Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd, and EEI Corporation.
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista highlighted that the project's timely completion hinges on resolving right-of-way (ROW) issues.
Some properties where the railway's stations are located are privately owned, and there are also challenges with a Department of Education (DepEd) building, deemed a heritage site and thus cannot be demolished.
"There are also issues like property owners that would not want to have the MMSP tunnel run under their property," Bautista added.
The department is actively engaging with these concerned parties to address ROW issues, ensuring the smooth progress of the project, said the DOTr chief.
