Missile Strikes Liberian-Flagged Cargo Ship in Strait of Hormuz

Details continue to emerge about the cargo ship struck overnight in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Liberian-flagged vessel MV Minoan Pioneer was hit by an unidentified projectile about 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, according to Greek maritime risk firm Marisks, "causing a complete electrical blackout onboard," ABC News reported.

Maritime sources told Reuters that the crew abandoned the vessel and that one seafarer remains missing.

"The projectile reportedly struck the engine room, while a fire broke out in the accommodation area.

The crew are fighting the fire and require assistance, while the third engineer is reported missing," Reuters quoted British maritime risk management firm Vanguard as saying.

Marisks said it remained unclear what type of projectile struck the vessel or who was responsible.

However, the immediate loss of power raised concerns that the ship sustained a direct hit rather than damage from a nearby explosion.

Maritime tracking data reviewed by CBS News showed the vessel is owned by the Greek company Modion Maritime Management SA. It had departed Sohar, Oman, and was bound for Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
