President Emmanuel Macron has accused protesters of “exploiting” the teenager’s death and urged parents to keep rioting children at home.

The captain of the French national football team, Kylian Mbappé, has called for violence to give way to mourning, dialogue and reconciliation. There have been demonstrations in Marseille, Lyon, Grenoble and some parts of Paris. The 17-year-old’s funeral will be held later on Saturday in the Nanterre suburb of the capital.

The mayor of Nanterre, the town to the west of Paris where Nahel M was killed, said there was "great sadness and indignation" at his death.

"Today, the demand for justice dominates. The thousands of people who have expressed their anger want to be sure that justice will be done fairly," Patrick Jarry told Le Monde. The left-winger and former French Communist Party member said "We must continue to surround" Nahel's mother.
