US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded a visit to China on Monday, June 19, 2023, holding a sit-down meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping after two days of talks with other senior officials, Haley Ott reported for CBS News.

The visit was an attempt to repair the deteriorating relationship between the two countries.
Blinken said he'd raised the issue of direct military-to-military communications multiple times during his visit to Beijing, but "at this moment, China has not agreed to move forward with that."
One of the issues that worsened US-Chinese relations has been Taiwan, a democratically self-governing island about 100 miles off the east coast of mainland China.
Taiwan has functioned for decades as a multi-party democracy, but China considers it part of its territory and will use force to “reunify” with the island it had never administered.
The US has not backed off from its defense ties with Taiwan, a big buyer of missiles, warplanes and warships.
China also wants to continue buying advanced chips from the US but Washington has maintained a ban even after Beijing pleaded with the World Trade Organization (WTO) for America to scrap it.
