OpenAI Staffers Revolt Over Controversial “Countries Plan”

Internal tensions at OpenAI reportedly escalated after leadership floated a proposal to leverage geopolitical rivalries among governments to advance the company’s interests, according to a report by Frank Landymore for Futurism.

The proposal, described in a broader investigation by The New Yorker, was internally referred to as the “countries plan.”

It allegedly involved encouraging competition among global powers, potentially including bidding wars, over access to advanced AI systems.

The report centers in part on Greg Brockman, who was said to have explored the idea in 2017. According to an ethics adviser cited in the report, the discussion raised concerns about triggering an AI arms race akin to nuclear competition.

Some employees reportedly objected to the concept, warning of serious ethical and geopolitical risks. The plan was ultimately not pursued.

The New Yorker investigation also examined leadership practices at the company under CEO Sam Altman.
