Panasonic plans to raise the US output of electric-vehicle (EV) batteries for top customer Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, Nikkei reported.

Photo Insert: Tesla would ultimately rely on Panasonic for its EV batteries as the Japanese company has been known to be engaged in developing batteries that rely less on rare earth elements (REE).

The expansion of the Gigafactory Nevada will increase annual production capacity by an estimated 10%, people familiar with the matter say.

In effect, Tesla would ultimately rely on Panasonic for its EV batteries as the Japanese company has been known to be engaged in developing batteries that rely less on rare earth elements (REE), with lithium being replaced by other abundant minerals.

The move also comes after Tesla assured Panasonic that it would buy as many batteries as the Japanese company could make.

This is an indication that Tesla, led by the narcissistic Elon Musk, is moving away from China as its principal supplier and expanding its supply chain, including Italian companies that produce cheaper automobile bodies.
