Senior officials from the US Department of Defense have held discussions with major manufacturers, including General Motors and Ford Motor Company, on expanding weapons production capacity, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal cited by Reuters.

The talks, which began before the escalation of the Iran conflict, reflect efforts by the administration of Donald Trump to broaden the US defense industrial base.
Officials explored whether commercial manufacturers could rapidly pivot to defense production to support traditional contractors amid rising global demand for military equipment.
Other companies involved in the discussions include GE Aerospace and Oshkosh Corporation.
A Pentagon official said the department aims to leverage commercial technologies and capabilities to ensure military readiness and maintain a strategic advantage.
The push comes as the US seeks to replenish stockpiles following recent military operations and prepare for sustained geopolitical tensions.
