Thousands of mostly young Danes turned out to protest in Copenhagen over the weekend, calling for more environmental protection, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) reported.

They marched from the Norrebro district up to Christiansborg Castle, which is home to the Danish parliament. The protesters carried a banner that read, "The climate crisis is not forgotten."
Most of the attendees wore protective face masks. There were thousands of protesters, according to Greenpeace environmental organization, while the Green Student Movement, one of the organizers, said there were more than 5,000. The police did not initially provide an estimate.
The government in Copenhagen has set a target of reducing the country's greenhouse emissions by 70 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, a more ambitious target than other EU countries.
However, climate protesters accuse the government under Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of failing to specify how exactly the country will achieve its 70 percent target.
During the pandemic, politicians have proven that they are capable of taking swift and drastic action, protesters say. Now, lawmakers should demonstrate the same willingness to act to address the climate crisis.
