PSE Index Pauses

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index today took a pause and closed a tad lower with low-value turnover as blue chips ended the day mixed in the absence of good economic news, falling by 0.10 percent, down to 6,628.64 points.

Market bellwether SM Investments went down by 1.38 percent to P927, down by P13 to tow the holding firms to a loss of 0.67 percent. This accounted for the index's decline as the other five sub-indices posted gains.


Ayala Corp also went down by a peso to P683 while Metro Pacific lost 2 centavos to P4.41.



Financials rose by 0.04 percent, industrials, up by 0.43 percent, services, up by 0.06 percent, property by 0.22 percent, and mining and oil by 1.03 percent. The index had a volatile run going up to a high of 6,658.16 before succumbing to profit-taking, leading to its lowest price point at the close.


SM Prime emerged as the most active stock with P397 million in trades as it went down by 20 centavos to P33.80.

BDO Unibank followed with trades of P326 million as it gained 50 centavos to P136.50. Ayala Corp was the third most active stock with P288 million in trades.


Total trades amounted to just P3.9 billion a third lower than average with 90 gainers, 81 losers, and 61 shares unchanged. Bank of PI and JG Summit were both unchanged, respectively closing at P105 and P49.95.

Among the gainers were PLDT, up P30 to p1, 275, Ayala Land, up 35 centavos to P27.35, Megaworld, up 7 centavos to P2.09, Jollibee Foods, up P5.40 to P232.40, Emperador, up 20 centavos to P21.20, Semirara Mining, up 45 centavos to P28.75, AgriNurture, up a centavo to P7.34, and NickelAsia, up 14 centavos to P5.99.


The losing stocks were Monde Nissin, down 12 centavos to P8.76, ICTSI, down 80 centavos to P203.80, Bloomberry, down by 12 centavos to P11.08, and Synergy Grid, which lost another 30 centavos on the announcement of a possible government takeover of the National Grid, to close at P8.95.
