PSE Index Tumbles a Level Down

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index tumbled a level down today, closing at 6,223.36 points, slumping by 132.42 points or 2.08%.

The market sell-off followed the announcement of a disappointing 3% fourth-quarter GDP growth, which triggered immediate selling pressure on blue-chip stocks.


Market bellwether SM Investments slipped below ₱700 for the first time in months, ending at ₱692, down 2.12%, after hitting an early high of ₱712.50.


ICTSI, the most active stock with ₱1.1 billion in trades, dropped 2.48% after opening higher and reaching an intraday high of ₱650.



All sub-indices declined except mining and oil, which bucked the trend on the back of soaring gold prices that topped USD 5,000 per ounce, closing 1.17% higher.


Apex Mining rose 3.23% to ₱15.98, while OceanaGold advanced 1.74% to ₱38.00, although Philex Mining slipped 0.85% to ₱11.60.


Financials fell 2.49%, industrials declined 0.70%, holding firms dropped 1.52%, services slid 2.00%, and property retreated 2.47%. Metrobank fell 2.64% to ₱70.10, SM Prime lost 4.93% to ₱21.20, Meralco eased 0.34% to ₱590.00, and San Miguel slumped 2.66% to ₱80.50.



Value turnover rose by nearly a quarter to ₱7.54 billion, with foreign trades accounting for ₱7.4 billion. Net foreign selling reached ₱406 million, with ₱3.533 billion in foreign buying and ₱3.939 billion in foreign selling.


There were 75 gainers, 124 losers, and 56 unchanged issues, including SPNEC, Topline, Abacore, DMC Holdings, Cebu Landmasters, and Megaworld.



Among the gainers were Jollibee Foods, Atlas Mining, Dominion Holdings, Ginebra, Maynilad, China Bank, and GT Capital. Among the losers were Security Bank, UnionBank, ACEN Corp., Ayala Corp., JG Summit, Robinsons Land, Cebu Air, and First Gen.
