PSE Index Up

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index today went up by just 34 points or 0.50 percent to 6,876.79 points, but the weak market sentiment showed a decline of 2.14 percent from its performance last week where it closed at 7,027.38 points.

Meralco was the day's favorite, emerging as the most active with trades of P938 million on projected higher earnings to close with a hefty 11.31 percent rise to P315, up by P32.

It was followed by Globe Telecom, which had trades of P545 million as it lost P64 or 3.08 percent to P2,016 resulting in the services sub-index posting the lone loss at 0.16 percent. The third most active with trades of p316 million was market bellwether SM Investments, which rose by P5 to P900.

Financials went up by 0.37 percent, industrials by 1.10 percent, holding firms by 0.49 percent, mining and oil by 0.08 percent, and property by 0.20 percent.

The lack of catalyst to power the index above the 7,000 milestone level is seen in the value turnover below average at P5.91 billion with 93 gainers, 90 losers, and 60 shares unchanged. Figaro Coffee and Bank of PI were both unchanged from the ranks of the Top 20 most active stocks with respective closing share prices of P1.04 and P106.50.

Among the gainers were GT Capital, up P15 to P530, Metrobank, up P1.15 to P61.35, Solar Philippines, up a centavo to P1.60, Ayala Land, up 15 centavos to P29.25, BDO Unibank, up 50 centavos to P125.50, ICTSI, up P2.60 to P214, Monde Nissin, up 2 centavos to P12.26, and SM Prime, up 10 centavos to P37.60.

The losers were Metro Pacific, down a centavo to P4.22, ACEN Corp, down 29 centavos to P7.01, Jollibee Foods, down P2 to P238.80, NickelAsia, down 15 centavos to P7.42, and DM Consunji, down 10 centavos to P11.76.
