PSEi Ends Nearly Flat After Volatile Session as Investors Weigh Risks

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) index ended Friday's session slightly higher after a volatile day of trading, closing at 6,072.24, up 1.18 points or 0.02 percent, as investors remained uncertain about the market's direction.

Blue-chip stocks traded mixed throughout the session as geopolitical risks persisted.


On the domestic front, concerns over the prospect of higher interest rates continued to weigh on business sentiment.


Political developments also dampened market enthusiasm, with the benchmark index reaching an intraday high of 6,112.48 points before falling to a low of 6,023.85 points.



Market bellwether SM Investments Corp. (SM Investments) edged up 0.08 percent to P596.50. The stock traded within a volatile range, reaching an intraday high of P598 and a low of P592.


Meanwhile, market favorite International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) declined 1.12 percent to P885 on profit-taking.



The stock traded between P867 and P913 during the session and remained the day's most actively traded issue, with turnover reaching P1.5 billion.


The property sector advanced as Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) and SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SM Prime) posted gains. ALI traded between P14.88 and P15.30, while SM Prime ranged from P18.22 to P18.52.


The industrial sector slipped 0.29 percent, weighed down by Jollibee Foods Corp., which fell 2.59 percent to P131.50.



Financials gained 1.06 percent, holding firms rose 0.72 percent, while services declined 1.06 percent. The mining and oil sector retreated 2.78 percent.


Foreign investors were net sellers by P481 million, with foreign buying amounting to P3.224 billion and foreign selling reaching P3.706 billion. Total market turnover stood at P8.51 billion.


Market breadth was positive, with 97 gainers, 80 losers and 66 unchanged issues.
