Just days before MGM's computer systems were compromised in a cyberattack, casino operator Caesars paid a ransom of $15 million to a cybercrime group that successfully infiltrated and disrupted its systems.

This development was reported by Rohan Goswami and Contessa Brewer for CNBC.
Caesars does not expect the ransom payment or its aftermath to have a significant impact on the company's bottom line, as indicated in an 8-K filing. Bloomberg had previously reported that the same cybercrime group was responsible for the attacks on both companies.
According to sources, the cybercrime group has also made a ransom demand to MGM. This marks two highly disruptive attacks on the gaming industry in a matter of weeks.
Caesars reported its incident in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Thursday morning. The 8-K report, similar to the one filed by MGM Resorts on Wednesday, acknowledges the hack as a material event.
