News has resurfaced regarding campaign contributions made to House Speaker Mike Johnson's congressional campaign by Russian nationals, as reported by Ewan Palmer for Newsweek.

In 2018, a group of Russians donated to Johnson's campaign for the Louisiana seat through the Texas-based American Ethane Co.

Although American John Houghtaling co-founded American Ethane, the company was predominantly owned by three Russian nationals—Konstantin Nikolaev, Mikhail Yuriev, and Andrey Kunatbaev—at the time.

Notably, Nikolaev is recognized as a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and previously served as Russia’s transport minister. Johnson's spokesperson confirmed in 2018 that the campaign returned the funds upon learning of the situation.

Accepting donations from foreign-owned corporations or individuals is prohibited by US law. Social media users have drawn attention to these campaign contributions following Johnson's opposition to a foreign aid bill allocating $60 billion to Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.

Johnson declined to bring the Senate-passed bill to a House vote on Feb. 14, prompting speculation on the motives behind his decision in light of the previous campaign donations.
