“All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support,” the message read at the bottom of the Rite Aid homepage, CBS News reported.

Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in May — its second filing in less than two years. The company had previously filed for bankruptcy in October 2023, saying the restructuring would “significantly reduce the company’s debt” and help “resolve litigation claims in an equitable manner.”

At that time, Rite Aid announced plans to close 154 stores. The company secured $3.45 billion in new financing to carry out its restructuring as it faced declining sales and mounting opioid-related lawsuits.

Since October 2023, more than 520 Rite Aid pharmacies have shut down — about a quarter of the 2,111 stores open when it first filed for bankruptcy.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a complaint against the company in March 2023, accusing Rite Aid of violating the False Claims Act and the Controlled Substances Act by filling unlawful prescriptions for drugs such as oxycodone, fentanyl, and benzodiazepines while ignoring internal red flags.

Founded in 1962, the company’s website now only provides a service to help former customers find a new pharmacy and a link to request pharmacy records.
