Frederik Pleitgen and Tim Lister report for CNN that this bomb, known as the FAB-1500, is a modified version of a basic Soviet-era weapon, now equipped with guidance systems and gliding capabilities.

The FAB-1500 weighs 1.5 tons, with almost half of its weight consisting of high explosives. It is delivered from fighter jets flying at a distance of 60-70 kilometers, beyond the range of many Ukrainian air defenses.

Guided by a sophisticated guidance system and equipped with pop-out wings for gliding, the FAB-1500 provides Russian tactical jets with a highly destructive stand-off strike option while keeping pilots safely away from enemy defenses.

Joseph Trevithick, who has researched the development of the bomb for TheWarZone, emphasizes that the FAB-1500 offers a new and significantly more destructive capability for Russia's tactical aircraft, allowing them to strike targets from a safer distance.
