Russia Sanctions 17-Year-Old British Researcher Over Crypto Laundering Report

A British 17-year-old researcher has been placed on a Russian sanctions list following the publication of a report alleging the existence of crypto-based money laundering networks linked to sanctioned states, Nathan Rennolds reported for Euronews.

Alexander Browder was reportedly sanctioned by Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, which accused him of spreading “defamatory speculation and false information,” according to reporting by Euronews.

His research paper, published through the Henry Jackson Society think tank, examined alleged illicit cryptocurrency flows and described what it characterized as large-scale laundering networks involving multiple states.

The report claimed that hundreds of billions of dollars in crypto-linked transactions may be connected to illicit finance channels involving countries such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

It also highlighted the use of stablecoin-like instruments allegedly designed to mirror fiat currencies, including one referred to as A7A5.

Western governments, including the United Kingdom, have previously expressed concern that Russia may use digital assets and alternative financial systems to evade sanctions, though specific figures cited in such reports remain contested and difficult to independently verify.
