The select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol on Thursday subpoenaed four of President Donald J. Trump’s closest allies, ramping up its scrutiny of what the former president was doing during the deadly riot, Luke Broadwater reported for the New York Times.

The committee issued subpoenas for information from Mark Meadows, a former White House chief of staff, Daniel Scavino Jr., former deputy chief of staff. Stephen K. Bannon, Mr. Trump’s former adviser, and Kash Patel, a former Pentagon chief of staff.

Trump has been bristling in the past few weeks, suing his niece Mary Trump for disclosing to the New York Times his tax returns, leading eventually to determinations that Trump used up $400 million of his father’s assets.

He is under investigation as well for election meddling in Georgia and other states and may soon be on the dock for tax fraud and illegal expenditures in New York state. Trump also faces more than 1,500 cases from his tenants for illegal exactions, and from former suppliers who have accused the defeated president of grifting them.
