Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) achieved a historic milestone in 2024, recording 16.5 million metric tons (MT) of coal shipments, surpassing the previous year’s high of 15.8 million MT.

This achievement was driven by increased demand from both international and domestic markets.

“For the third consecutive year, we have reached our maximum coal production of 16 million metric tons under our existing Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). This milestone reflects the SMPC team’s dedication to meeting growing energy demand locally and globally,” said SMPC President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Sustainability Officer Maria Cristina C. Gotianun.

Foreign shipments rose 4% to 8.4 million MT, with exports to China jumping by 46% to 7.6 million MT. Meanwhile, domestic shipments grew by 4% to 8.0 million MT, fueled by rising demand from local cement producers and Calaca power plants.

Notably, 20% of the 1.3 million MT sold to cement plants was supplied to CEMEX Holdings Philippines Inc. (CHP), an associate company.

“While we expect market prices to normalize in 2025, our focus remains on strengthening our customer network and improving operational efficiencies. These efforts will allow us to support national energy security while addressing the growing demand from industrial and cement sectors,” Gotianun added.
