Sen. Mark Kelly Urges Trump to Appoint Experienced Iran Negotiators

Sen. Mark Kelly criticized President Donald Trump's choice of negotiators for talks with Iran, urging the administration to appoint more experienced diplomats, John Bowden reported for The Independent.

Appearing on CBS's Face the Nation, Kelly said the president should replace Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, arguing that the negotiations require seasoned diplomatic leadership.

"I would suggest to him, though, that the solution is not to do the same thing that he's been doing—not to have his real estate buddy and his son-in-law in charge of a negotiation," Kelly said.

Instead, Kelly urged the president to appoint negotiators with extensive diplomatic experience.

"Put some people in here that know how to do this, how to talk to the Iranians, and put a coalition together—bring our allies back together," he said. Kelly's remarks came as negotiations continued amid ongoing efforts to de-escalate the conflict between the United States and Iran.
