SK Chips Ruin Huawei Claim Of Self-Reliance

Huawei Technologies has demonstrated its ability to circumvent US sanctions by launching the Mate60 Pro phone.

However, the use of two South Korean chips has prompted caution among Chinese commentators, as reported by Jeff Pao for Asia Times.


TechInsights, a Canadian research firm, reported on September 3 that the Mate60 Pro's central processing unit (CPU) was produced by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC).



Chinese commentators initially applauded Huawei and SMIC for producing 7-nanometer chips with N+2 processing technology. However, the US Commerce Department initiated an investigation following these revelations.

While the success of the Mate60 Pro has filled Chinese citizens with enthusiasm, they argue that it is time to temper their promotion of it, as this could result in further sanctions against the company.

Professor Guan Quan of Renmin University of China, using the Chinese term "peng sha" to describe excessive praise, stated in an article published on Monday, "Its purpose is actually very clear. It wants to find out loopholes and impose more severe sanctions on Huawei. The excessive praise of Huawei will only cause more problems, as the company is now at the forefront of the chip war. China's current strategy should be to maintain a low profile and accumulate energy."
