During SpaceX's first earnings call since its June initial public offering (IPO), President Gwynne Shotwell said the company plans to launch its next-generation Starlink Mobile satellites in 2027, with upgraded service expected by the end of that year.
Currently, Starlink Mobile provides cellular connectivity in remote areas and during network outages.
The next-generation satellites are expected to significantly expand coverage and network capacity.
The enhanced network will use the additional 65 megahertz of wireless spectrum that SpaceX has agreed to acquire from EchoStar. Shotwell said the upgraded service would be "100 times better" than Starlink Mobile's current offering.
Shotwell also said SpaceX intends to compete directly with the three largest U.S. wireless carriers.
"I anticipate us to be able to acquire quite a few of their customers because I think our service will be better," she said.
