Spanish Prime Minister Calls Trump’s UN Speech Ideological

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, describing the speech as ideological and saying some of Trump’s positions were not broadly supported internationally, Dana Herrnstadt reported for The Daily Beast.

In comments previewed from an interview with Jon Stewart, Sánchez said Trump’s remarks were “not backed and supported by facts and data.”

He also said Trump’s positions on climate change, the war in Iran and other issues were not broadly supported by many countries.

Trump’s roughly 40-minute speech included warnings that the United States could “annihilate” Iran if a peace agreement was not reached, criticism of Cuba and opposition to international regulation of artificial intelligence.

The Iranian and Cuban delegations left the General Assembly chamber at different points during the speech. Reports said Iranian representatives departed while Trump was discussing U.S. military action against Iran, while the Cuban delegation left after he criticized Cuba’s government.

Trump also encountered CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins at the United Nations after CNN and other news organizations had been barred from the White House. Collins told Trump that the UN had permitted CNN to cover the event.

The White House access dispute is separate from the UN’s credentialing of journalists.
