Sparse Seats Overshadow Trump's GOP Midterm Convention in Dallas

The Republican National Committee's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas was intended to energize the party ahead of the November elections and showcase President Donald Trump's political agenda.

Instead, visible empty seats inside the American Airlines Center became a prominent feature of coverage of the two-day event.
Trump described the convention as a "sold-out hit" and claimed that the event attracted thousands of people who were unable to get inside. Images and video from the arena, however, showed substantial areas of empty seating, particularly in the upper sections.
There was no official attendance figure available to substantiate Trump's claim that the convention broke attendance records at the arena.
The convention came as Republicans face a difficult political environment ahead of the November midterm elections, with Trump's approval rating weakened and Democrats competitive in several key congressional and Senate races.
Trump used his speech to defend his administration's policies, including its handling of the war with Iran, and to rally Republicans around the midterm campaign.
He also made an unusual pledge: a proposed $5,000 "Trump dividend" for every American adult if Republicans retain control of both the House and Senate.
Trump did not provide details about how the payments would be financed or whether Congress would need to approve them. The proposal would require congressional action to become law.
The convention therefore produced a mixed picture: Trump demonstrated his continued influence over the Republican Party, while sparse sections of the arena and difficult electoral conditions underscored the challenges facing Republicans ahead of the midterms.
