Spirit Airlines, a disruptive low-cost carrier known for its bold advertising and ultra-cheap fares, has announced that it has ceased operations after 34 years, Aamer Madhani reported for the Associated Press (AP).

The airline, which once operated hundreds of daily flights on its signature yellow planes and employed about 17,000 people, said it had “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.”
According to a statement on its website, all flights have been canceled and customer service has been discontinued.
“We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come,” the company said.
The shutdown is expected to have ripple effects on budget travel and major hubs such as Las Vegas and Orlando.
Passengers holding Spirit tickets now face uncertainty, with reports of stranded travelers and widespread cancellations.
