A boy who went missing when a deadly tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004 has been tracked down by his mother after a years-long search in the eastern part of the country, police said Tuesday, Peter Spinella reported for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa)

The boy, identified as Akram Rizkhan, was 5-years-old when the tsunami hit his village in Karativu, 367 km east of the capital, on December 26. The child was initially admitted to a hospital in the area, but was then adopted by a family, said Abusaly Siddi, the mother of the boy.

“I searched for my son for several years, but could not trace him - I appealed to the president and sought police assistance,” Amali told journalists after the reunification.

Eventually, she received information that her son had been adopted and got in touch with the family. After a DNA test was carried out, the mother was reunited with her son. The tsunami left over 38,000 dead and caused severe damage to coastal villages in eastern, southern and western provinces.
