Storms Flood Belgium Anew, Cars Washed Away

In Belgium, renewed storms washed away several cars on Saturday, July 24, 2021, just a week after the country was faced with deadly flooding, Marek Majewsky reported for Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa).

Vehicles in the city of Dinant were swept away by floodwaters, blocking a rail crossing, Belga news agency reported on Saturday evening, citing railway company Infrabel.

However, rail traffic had already been suspended because of the flooding earlier this month. There were also floods in the city of Namur, according to public broadcaster RTBF.

Other cities and towns across Belgium were also affected, Belga reported. In Walloon Brabant province there were reports of landslides and in Antwerp province in the country's north, rescue authorities responded to many calls for help. In that region houses were flooded and a house was struck by lightning.

No information about possible deaths or injuries was immediately available. As of Friday, Belgium had recorded 36 deaths due to the earlier flooding and several people are still missing.
