Sugar production for this year is projected to increase slightly, assuming that the impact of El Niño is not too severe, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

Sugar production could increase by 50 thousand metric tons (MT).
SRA Administrator Pablo Luis S. Azcona mentioned at an agriculture forum organized by the European Chamber of Commerce that sugar production could increase by 50 thousand metric tons (MT).
Azcona also added that the total area planted with sugarcane is expected to expand by at least 3,000 hectares. In the previous crop year, sugar production declined to about 1.8 million MT from the previous 2.1 million MT due to several typhoons affecting cane production.
The sugar crop season typically commences in September.
