The suspect, identified as Floyd Ray Roseberry of North Carolina, was safely taken into custody after an hours-long standoff, police confirmed, Kyodo News reported.
"Around 9:15 this morning, a man in a black pickup truck drove onto the sidewalk in front of the Library of Congress," US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger told reporters earlier Thursday while negotiators were still engaging the suspect.
"The driver of the truck told the responding officer on the scene that he had a bomb, and what the officer said appeared to be a detonator (was) in the man's hand," Manger added.
"We immediately evacuated nearby buildings." People in two buildings of the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and an office building of the House of Representatives were temporarily evacuated, CNN reported.
