Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has revealed irrefutable evidence that Ukraine existed as a self-governing entity as early as 1711, contrary to Russian President Vladimir Putin's allegations that Ukraine is not a nation and is a part of Russia.

Andersson brought a copy of King Charles XII of Sweden's 1711 letter acknowledging Zaporizhzhia Sich's independence and underlined that the Russian invasion was motivated by tsarist ambitions. "President Volodymyr Zelensky says that Ukrainians are fighting not just for Ukraine, but for the civilized world and democratic values. And this is the absolute truth," she was quoted as saying on July 5, 2022 by Ukrainian broadcasting agency Ukrinform.

Andersson stated at a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv that in the letter, King Charles XII "gives instructions to the Swedish ambassador to recognize Zaporizhzhia Sich as an independent state, as a subject of international law, so that there is no oppression from the Moscow tsar. I think it fits very well in the current political context. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, our king was impressed by Cossacks and Cossack democracy."

Zelensky displayed the document and read a portion of its translation: "For the article on the freedom of Ukraine and all Cossacks to be implemented as soon as possible, for their long-time freedom, ownership of their land, and former borders to be returned to all of Ukraine and the Zaporizhzhia Army led by incumbent commander Pylyp Orlyk, for this people to become an independent state from now on and not to ever submit to or be protected by the king."
