After Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated that "reunification" with Taiwan is inevitable, President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan asserted that the island's relations with China must be determined by the will of the people.

Ben Blanchard reported for Reuters that President Tsai emphasized the importance of democracy in deciding the course of relations with China.


Xi's comments marked a more assertive stance than the previous year, and Taiwan, gearing up for presidential and parliamentary elections on January 13, faces increased military pressure from China.
