Members of the Teamsters union have authorized a strike against Costco on Feb. 1 unless a deal is reached with the warehouse retailer before the current contract expires on Jan. 31, Chris Isidore reported for CNN.

The union announced that 18,000 Costco workers are set to strike at 56 of the company’s warehouse stores across five states, after 85% of members voted to authorize the action.

In addition to disagreements on wages and benefits, the union cited Costco's rejection of proposals related to seniority pay, paid family leave, bereavement policies, sick time, and safeguards against surveillance.

While relatively small in percentage, the potential strike marks a significant event for a U.S. retailer, a sector that is overwhelmingly non-unionized. Labor Department statistics show that less than 5% of retail workers are unionized, with most representation found in the grocery store sector.

The Teamsters also staged a strike at Amazon just before Christmas. However, unlike Costco, Amazon does not recognize the union and has refused to negotiate or sign any contracts.
