Telco Stocks Clip PSE Index's Rise

A decline in telco stocks denied the Philippine Stock Exchange another gain Thursday, as a hefty 1.13 percent plunge in the services sector overshadowed gains in conglomerates and four other sub-indices.

Globe Telecom, PLDT, and Converge posted gains early in the session but slipped by the close, dragging the PSE index down to 6,444.16, a loss of 18.09 points or 0.28 percent.


Market bellwether SM Investments edged up slightly to ₱842, gaining ₱0.50 or 0.06 percent.


Meanwhile, DigiPlus surged again, closing at ₱27.25, up ₱3.00 or 12.37 percent, and emerged as the day’s most active stock with ₱1.319 billion in trades.


Financials gained 0.40 percent, industrials rose by 0.003 percent, holding firms advanced by 0.05 percent, property increased by 0.29 percent, and mining and oil climbed 1.36 percent.


Total value turnover amounted to ₱6.35 billion, with foreign trades accounting for ₱5.5 billion. The market opened on a positive note, hitting a high of 6,466.10 points, but later declined to an intraday low of 6,436.34.


As a result, Globe shares, which peaked at ₱1,689, closed lower at ₱1,664, down ₱26 or 1.54 percent. Converge reached ₱18.54 during the session but fell to ₱18.20, a ₱1.24 or 1.30 percent drop by the close.


There was net foreign buying of ₱2.83 billion, outpacing foreign selling of ₱2.713 billion, resulting in a net inflow of ₱96.2 million. The market saw 97 gainers, 99 losers, and 56 unchanged.


Among the gainers were BDO Unibank, China Bank, PNB, Alternergy, First Gen, Manila Water, Jollibee Foods, SM Prime, Vitarich, Megawide, JG Summit, DoubleDragon, ICTSI, Wilcon Depot, Puregold, Nickel Asia, Apex Mining, OceanaGold, and Atlas Mining.


Among the losers were Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Citystate Savings, Security Bank, SPNEC, GT Capital, MRC Allied, Philex Mining, PXP Energy, and D&L Industries. Alliance Global, Citicore REIT, Megaworld, Filinvest Land, Synergy Grid, Emperador, Figaro Coffee, and Philodrill, on the other hand, ended the trading day unchanged.
