Tesla's sharp post-earnings stock decline has fueled concerns that investors may be losing confidence in CEO Elon Musk's long-standing ability to deliver on ambitious promises, Al Root reported for Barron's Daily.

Tesla shares fell 14% after the company reported second-quarter earnings that fell well short of expectations. Net profit totaled $398 million, significantly below analysts' estimates of $1.7 billion, despite vehicle deliveries rising 25% to about 480,000 units.
The weaker results reflected lower vehicle pricing, reduced regulatory credit sales, rising operating costs, and increased research and development spending.
Future Fund co-founder Gary Black said investors are "losing patience with hype followed by a lack of follow-through."
During the earnings call, Musk highlighted Tesla's robotaxi program and humanoid robotics initiatives, calling robots the company's "biggest product ever." However, analysts say investors are increasingly looking for measurable execution rather than ambitious projections.
Tesla continues to invest heavily in expanding manufacturing capacity, but the higher spending has weighed on profitability.
Even after the decline, Tesla trades at roughly 175 times projected 2026 earnings, compared with an average of about 24 times for other Magnificent Seven companies, underscoring the premium investors have historically placed on Musk's long-term vision.
