A Texas law imposing a near-total ban on abortion that the US Supreme Court allowed to stand will cause "unconstitutional chaos" by infringing on a right that women have exercised for almost a half-century, President Joe Biden warned, Lawrence Hurley and Andrew Chung reported for Reuters.

Republicans and their allies in various states have vowed to smother abortion laws and could pressure the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision in Roe vs. Wade that decriminalized abortion.

Biden’s statement was issued as the US House of Representatives plans to debate and vote on legislation aimed at stopping states from enacting tough anti-abortion regulations like the one in Texas, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday, but the bill's prospects in the Senate were slim, Susan Cornwell reported for Reuters.

To signify that he will battle head-on with the Republican-controlled Texas legislature, Jeff Mason reported for Reuters that Biden said he is launching a "whole-of-government effort," including from the White House counsel, to combat a strict new Texas abortion law after an overnight Supreme Court decision let it stand.
