In a landmark decision, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has resumed its investigation into the reported brutal anti-narcotics campaign led by former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

This comes after the ICC rejected the Philippine government's appeal in July, allowing the probe to delve into the thousands of killings during Duterte's controversial 'war on drugs' and other suspected human rights abuses.

The question looming large is whether Rodrigo Duterte will share the fate of previous regime leaders and key figures who faced international courts for charges such as genocide and crimes against humanity.

The Council on Foreign Relations has meticulously compiled a historical timeline titled "Leaders Facing Justice," shedding light on significant cases that have shaped the pursuit of justice on the global stage.

The journey into accountability begins with the Nuremberg Trials after World War II, where surviving leaders of the Nazi regime faced the first international war crimes trials. Eleven of the twenty-four defendants were sentenced to death, marking a pivotal moment in history.

Fast forward to 1985, Argentina initiated trials for military officials involved in the Dirty War, securing convictions for crimes against humanity, including a life sentence for former de facto President General Jorge Videla.

The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, established in 1993, sought justice for atrocities committed in the Balkans.

Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic faced charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, becoming the first former head of state tried by an international tribunal since World War II.

The tribunal indicted 161 individuals, with notable sentences for figures like Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, responsible for the Srebrenica massacre.

The Tribunal for Rwandan Genocide, created by the UN Security Council in 1994, played a crucial role in addressing the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) completed ninety-three cases, delivering justice for crimes against humanity and genocide.

Similarly, the legal battles of Augusto Pinochet, former Chilean President, unfolded in a series of events, including his arrest in 1998 and subsequent legal challenges.

The turn of the century witnessed the establishment of the International Criminal Court in 2002, a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the gravest violations of international law.

Sierra Leone's Special Court, formed in 2002, saw the conviction of former Liberian President Charles Taylor in 2012, marking another precedent for holding a head of state accountable.

The ICC's involvement expanded to include figures like Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, indicted in 2009 for orchestrating mass violence in Darfur. Although Bashir faced charges, the ICC struggled to secure his arrest, showcasing the challenges in enforcing international justice.

The timeline extends to cases such as the indictment of Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi in 2011 and the subsequent challenges in prosecuting Kenyan leaders Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto for crimes against humanity.

As we navigate through the chronicles of leaders facing justice, the spotlight turns to Rodrigo Duterte. Will he join the ranks of those held accountable for grave human rights abuses?

The ICC's pursuit of justice stands as a beacon of hope for accountability, reminding the world that no leader is above the law, regardless of their position or political influence.
