Tillis Conditions Support for Todd Blanche on Meeting With Epstein Accusers

President Donald Trump's nominee for the nation's top law enforcement position may not be confirmed unless he meets with women who say Jeffrey Epstein abused them, Erin Mansfield, Aysha Bagchi, and Zachary Schermele reported for USA Today.

Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, said he would not vote to support Todd Blanche as attorney general until he meets with Epstein's accusers, who say they have tried for months to meet with him without success.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is considering Blanche's nomination and is scheduled to vote on whether to advance it to the full Senate. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

If four Republicans join all Democrats in opposing Blanche's nomination, he would fail to secure confirmation.

Since the July 11 death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Republicans hold only an 11-10 majority over Democrats on the committee, making Blanche's path to a full Senate vote narrower.

If Democrats unanimously oppose the nomination, Tillis' position could effectively block its advancement unless Blanche meets with the women.

"I'm trying to get to yes, but this is a very important part of getting to yes," Tillis said.

The vote of Sen. John Cornyn, another influential Republican on the committee, also remains uncertain.
