Toshiba Corp. announced plans to cut up to 6% of its workforce in Japan, equivalent to about 4,000 jobs, by offering early retirement packages and reducing redundant operations, Kyodo News reported.

President Taro Shimada explained that this decision is necessary to ensure the company's long-term survival.

The early retirement plan targets domestic employees aged 50 and over at Toshiba group firms, focusing primarily on back-office departments. The job cuts are expected to be completed by the end of November.

Toshiba plans to redirect its resources to growth areas such as power semiconductors for electric vehicles, artificial intelligence products, renewable energy equipment, and quantum technology.

In another effort to streamline operations, Toshiba will integrate four main subsidiaries operating in energy and infrastructure into the parent company, as reported by Mainichi Shimbun.
