Toyota to "Reverse-Import" U.S.-Built Camry Sedans to Japan

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to begin “reverse-importing” U.S.-built Camry sedans into Japan as early as this fall, in a move aimed at showcasing its global manufacturing strategy and responding to ongoing trade pressures, according to reports.

The automaker intends to sell around 10,000 units annually in Japan, Kyodo News reported.

The vehicles will be modified with right-hand steering to comply with Japanese road regulations.

At a related event in Shizuoka Prefecture, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said the initiative could help improve trade balance discussions and potentially ease tariff tensions.

The Camry was previously sold in Japan until 2023. The new plan follows similar efforts by Toyota, which has already introduced U.S.-made models such as the Tundra pickup and Highlander SUV in the Japanese market.
